As a parent who listened to this with my 7-year-old, this LibriVox recording was a delightful introduction to Hugh Lofting’s classic. The volunteer narrators bring warmth to the tale of the doctor who learns to speak with animals, though quality varies between chapters.
At just over 3 hours, this abridged version maintains the charm of Dolittle’s adventures while keeping my child engaged. The scenes with Polynesia the parrot and the voyage to Africa were particular favorites, sparking wonderful conversations about animal communication.
While some dated elements required explanation, the core message about kindness to animals resonates beautifully. For a free recording, it exceeded expectations and has become a bedtime favorite. My child now pretends to speak “animal language” with our cat!
